"Diesel" Isn't One Fuel — Here's Why That Matters at the Pump
Most fleets treat diesel like a single, standard product — you pull up to the pump, you fill up, done. In practice, "diesel" covers a handful of distinct fuel specs, each with different refining requirements and different behavior in your engine. Knowing which is which explains a lot of the cold-weather calls and pricing swings I get asked about.
The main types you'll actually run into
ULSD (Ultra-Low Sulfur Diesel) has been the on-highway standard across the US and Canada since 2010, capped at 15 ppm sulfur, and it's what every modern emissions-controlled truck with SCR and a particulate filter is built to run on. No. 2 diesel is the workhorse blend behind most of that ULSD at the pump, offering the best energy content for day-to-day hauling. No. 1 diesel trades a bit of that energy content for better cold-flow performance, which is why you see it blended into No. 2 during winter in colder regions. Then there's biodiesel and renewable diesel (RD/HVO) — biodiesel blends can bring cold-flow and storage headaches long-haul fleets don't love, while renewable diesel behaves much closer to standard diesel with strong cold-weather performance, which is why it's gaining ground in California and other low-carbon states.
The type of diesel in your tank isn't just a spec sheet detail — it's part of why two trucks in two regions can perform differently in the same cold snap.
Why the price swings around so much
Sulfur content, refining complexity, blending rules, and regional demand all move the price independently of each other — which is why diesel prices can shift by region even before you factor in global events. Crude supply disruptions, shipping route instability, refinery outages, and plain market volatility all filter down into what you're paying at a truck stop, and West Coast diesel in particular tends to run more expensive due to tighter environmental rules and limited pipeline capacity.
