And some rely on light engine oil, which can smooth engine feel briefly but fouls injector tips with repeated use and actually lowers energy content, horsepower, and mileage — the opposite of what a fleet is paying for.
An additive that makes an engine feel smoother isn't the same as one that makes it perform better. Sometimes it's the opposite.
What separates a real additive from marketing
Legitimate fuel treatments are backed by independent laboratory testing against recognized standards — ASTM, ISO, SAE, TMC, or CEC — to verify both compound uniformity and the performance claims made on the label. Fuel isn't just fuel to the injection system — it's also the lubricant for the pumps and injectors that move it. Poor lubricity, measured by HFRR wear scar testing, means more friction and faster wear on parts that are expensive and time-consuming to replace. EPA's maximum allowed wear scar for ULSD is 520 on the HFRR scale, but heavy-duty industry groups recommend a tighter 460 for what they consider truly premium fuel — most fuel at the pump lands somewhere in between.

Cetane number gets less attention from fleet operators than almost any other fuel spec, mostly because it doesn't show up on the pump the way price does. It's also one of the specs most directly tied to how well your engine actually runs.
What cetane number is doing for you
Cetane number measures how quickly diesel fuel ignites after injection. A higher number means less delay between injection and combustion, which means smoother, more complete burning — the practical result is easier cold starts, smoother idling, lower emissions, and better fuel economy. Federal minimum for regular diesel is 40, and most ULSD at the pump runs only slightly above that, around 40 to 43.
A higher cetane number doesn't just make an engine start easier in the cold. It makes every gallon burn more completely, all year.
How much room there is to improve it
A quality cetane improver can raise a fuel's cetane number by 6 to 8 points above the pump baseline — a meaningful jump in ignition quality and the horsepower and mileage that follow from it. For an operation running a lot of miles, that kind of improvement compounds fast, in fewer cold-start issues and better fuel economy across the fleet.

The Real Cost of Water in Your Fuel Tank
Water is the most common contaminant in diesel fuel, and it's also one of the most damaging — not because it's dramatic, but because it's constant. Water gets into fuel at nearly every stage: refining, transport, storage, and even normal engine operation.
What water actually does once it's in the tank
Suspended water hurts combustion and lowers energy content. It fouls injectors, wears out pumps, and abrades injector tip needles. It acts like a sponge, picking up dirt and debris and carrying it through the fuel system. In cold weather it freezes and blocks fuel lines outright. And over time, it can even combine with fuel components to form corrosive acid inside the system.
Water in fuel doesn't announce itself. It just quietly wears out the parts that touch it first.
Why refiners can't fix this one for you
Refiners and distributors don't add water removers in bulk, because the amount of water in a given batch of fuel changes daily — there's no fixed treat rate that works for every delivery. That's exactly why a water-removing bottled additive is one most fleets end up needing regardless of what grade of fuel they're buying, and it's typically the cheapest, most cost-effective treatment available.
